The use of black & white for these images is a great choice. I believe that these same photos in color would not have been as compelling as the B&W images.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite image is "Simple Travels." The line created by the convergence of the dirt land and field that extends from the bottom right to the top left of the image provides a powerful metaphor as a background for the concept of the image for simple travels. I don't know if this image is "as shot" or whether you cropped it. If it's "as shot", your timing is awesome. If its cropped, you did a perfect job of it. The position in the image of the woman on the bike at the bottom right with the aforementioned converging line of the road and field really provide an additional sense of the simplicity of this society.
The image that I think needs a little more work is "Wash Day." The clothes on the line really stand out and I think this is important. The laundress, however, is lost in the corn field. It is my opinion that having the both the laundress and the clothes as the points of focus in the image would make it much more powerful. Also, I'd like to see less sky, particularly in the top right. The cloudless sky is so bright that my eyes went from the clothes to the sky (and out of the image) before my eyes went back into the image to see the laundress and the environment in which the clothes and woman were located.
Thanks for commenting, Simple Travels is my favorite image also. I was hanging out the window of the car as we were driving to capture that and only slightly cropped this image. Wash Day is not my favorite image for the same reasons you stated, I included it, because it was part of the story. Can't wait to go back and capture more images!
ReplyDeleteTexture and Balance
ReplyDeleteWash Day:
Comment by others I agree with. This is some additional thoughts.
The sky is an issue. It would be difficult to replace. Better to darken the sky. From the top of corn on down, the image is too dark and contrasted. Lighten the darks and shadows. Use railings on left and walkway under person to give the eye someplace to travel with the wash person. When you are done adding in the texture and balance with all of these effects, this will be really nice image.
