Graphic Design

Title: "The Robot Quarterly"

Media: Digital/Graphic Design

Size: 8"x 10"

Date Completed: Spring 2013

This is an example of a magazine layout I created in Photoshop and completed for Graphic Design II. The background image used is a digital painting created by my husband. I've always enjoyed this painting and thought it would be a great piece to use as a magazine cover. I came up with the magazine "articles" and used two different fonts to help tie into the magazine image; a nice bold font for the main title and for most of the body copy, and a script font that added a nice contrast and balance with the overall image. The font colors: yellow and white; were picked as a contrast to the purples and reds which helps the main content points standout and grab the casual browser's attention.
Title: "The Queen of Hearts"
Media: Digital/Graphic Design
Size: 5" x 13"
Date Completed: Fall 2012

I created "The Queen of Hearts" playing cards for the final project of Fall Semester, 2012 for Graphic Design I. Working in Illustrator and InDesign for the layout and font, I took a picture of a cameo I have, which features the Victorian woman skeleton. From that image, I vectored my "Queen of Hearts" and created a double image to emulate a playing card character. I used a "doily" pattern with a transparency added for the background image for the suite and face card. I used the same "doily" pattern for the back of the playing card as well as roses to create a unique kaleidoscope affect. I added a rose to the Queen to give her more of a romantic feel. My color palette and font choice helped unify the piece as a whole.

Title: "Down the Rabbit Hole"
Media: Digital/Graphic Design
Size: 11" x 17"
Date Completed: Spring 2013

The right-side layout was completed in Graphic Design II as an option for consideration for "Threshold" magazine. The theme of "Threshold" was "Through the Looking Glass". Working in the Alice in Wonderland theme, the text on the left side of the layout was already determined but the right side of the layout was in need of an image to illustrate falling down the rabbit hole. I created my spiral text layout in Illustrator and used the existing artwork of the rabbit to give an illusion of falling down the rabbit hole.

  1. Hi Sunshine, I love the layout of your magazine. It's very comic book style, and the garish purple gives such a sense of science fiction. You're good with layout. Nice work. Jaime

  2. Love the magazine cover! The robots pose, the weird blob scared face and the direction of lighting all scream "Magazine cover".
The color combination, outline, and symmetry of your design all pull the viewer into the images and holds them there. The colors also reflect the "death" theme very well.
The bunny! The simplicity of the rabbit and lettering encompass the whole idea of Alice in Wonderland. Great work Sunshine=^.^=
