First Three Pieces by Vanessa Martin (Ceramics)

"Daring Glazed Bowl," porcelain, high-fire, 8" across, 2009.

"Ribboned Cobalt Vase," porcelain, high fire, 6" high, 2009.

"Sprigged Sea Creature Vase," porcelain, high-fire, 5" high, 2009.
As a Fine Arts student, my portfolio represents a varied cross-section of my work.  These first three pieces are all hand thrown porcelain pieces and are high fired using mostly glazes I made.  The bottom one features sprigs of various sea creatures that were highlighted with a high-fired underglaze color.  I was working for mastery of the thrown form and these three pieces are just a few of the pieces that most satisfied my personal aesthetic.  I find myself drawn to curves and have always enjoyed adding fine details to otherwise simple and utilitarian pieces.  Unexpected results such as running glazes and pops of color are always a pleasure.

  1. Hi Vanessa! I love the use of bright colors (the blue especially). You also have a great sense of balance in your designs, like the glaze placement in "Daring Glazed Bowl" and the placement of the sea creatures on "Sprigged Sea Creature Vase." I also think your photography looks very professional.
